Designers please ASK permission from street artists before incorporating their work into your designs. Do not assume most graffiti/street art murals are done illegally. This may be the case for Designer Roberto Cavalli.
He is being sued by a group of popular Northern California-based graffiti artists accusing him of copying/incorporating their work into his Spring/Summer 14 ‘Just Cavalli’ collection.
The street artists - Jason Williams, Victor Chapa, and Jeffrey Rubin (who go by Revok, Reyes and Steel) - filed a suit at the Central District of California stemming from a work they completed in San Francisco’s Mission district in 2012.
Their complaint states that in March, ‘Just Cavalli' introduced a clothing and accessories collection in which every square inch of every piece (including clothing, bags, backpacks, and shoes) were adorned with graffiti art.” The court documents go on to state: ”If this literal misappropriation was not bad enough, Cavalli sometimes chose to do its own painting over that of the artists .
The artists are asking the court to award them damages and they want Cavalli’s collection discontinued, as it is portraying them in a very unflattering light.
Looks VERY similar to me:-)
