Where are all the Mom & Pop Stores in NY now?????

Years ago, Downtown NY used to be the epitome of where individuality meets Fashion.  You could find the coolest Mom & Pop shops with the best unique assortments.  I once bought an antique wool ‘Wolford' coat 15 years ago from a store that used to be in 'The Village', 8th st, (it’s out of business now of course) and every time i  Rock it i get a lot of compliments, its that unique and fun:-)
Due to the rent hike in the city lately, we are loosing all these creative, unique finds to boring banks, fast food chains or the big Retailers.

Camouflage, was a great men’s store in Chelsea owned by a family I have known for years and its unfortunate that after 38 years they have to close down due to the rent hike from $7,000 to a staggering $24,000 a month, really????  Chelsea has changed tremendously over the years its actually kind of boring walking down there now.  I remember all the fun boutiques with their unique and exquisite window displays that lured you in.

There are still some parts of Soho, with what little is left of boutiques some of which are by major Designers, it just really sucks.  I guess I have to keep on searching or perharps I need to cross over the bridge and explore WilliamsBurg in Brooklyn, the new fashion hub.
