Afghanistan appointed a 50-year-old mother-of-five as the first female police chief. Col. Jamila Bayaz said her appointment was a sign of progress in the violence-ravaged country. "This is a chance not just for me, but for the women of Afghanistan," she told NBC News Wednesday. "I will not waste it. I will prove that we can handle this burden."
Catherine Samba-Panza was recently appointed as the President of the Central African Republic (CAR). She would be the continent of Africa's third female president. Her gender has been a talking point for many and local media has dubbed her “mother courage” – a nod to her fearlessness as the country still struggles with a civil war.

When recruiters said they could not hire her because they needed a man, Cao Ju fought back and sued the employer. The company recently settled with the young Beijing graduate for 30,000 yuan ($5,ooo), in what is believed to be China's first gender discrimination lawsuit.
