First Lady Michelle Obama in a top by Maki Oh, African tour in 2013 |
Nigerian Fashion Designer Amaka Osakwe created her label in 2010. Her contemporary designs feature a knack of her African heritage reflecting clean lines & proportion. She is definitely one to watch... She describes her inspiration for this collection via Style.com as "Mermaids, her guiding concepts this season, "and appropriation." These two nouns are connected to the figure of 'Mami Wata,' a folk deity in Osakwe's native Nigeria, whom she described as "keeper of virgins and goddess of the river" (also referred to as an evil deity to some).
Check out my fav's from the collection.
