"Dress, Dreams, and Desire: Fashion and
Psychoanalysis" is making waves as the 1st exhibition of it's kind at the Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T, my alma mater!). Why is it a 1st and took 5 years to complete? It explores the fascinating link
between what we wear and the unconscious mind. Interesting!
Quick Refresher: Psychoanalysis
is basically a form of Therapy about digging into your hidden thoughts and childhood experiences
to figure out why you act or feel a certain way. Kind of like uncovering the
“behind-the-scenes” of your mind so you can level up in life. Mnnn🤔, in ref to linking this to fashion, so on my days that I feel like having a Goth look, does this mean there is something dark I need to address? Guess this would be answered once the exhibition opens and the publication is available…
Curated by Dr. Valerie Steele , the legendary director of
The Museum at FIT, P.S. you know you are 'legendary' when esteemed British fashion critic Suzy Menkes, call's you 'The Freud of Fashion.' The exhibit features about 100 looks from fashion icons such as, Alexander McQueen, Elsa Schiaparelli, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Gianni and
Donatella Versace, John Galliano for Dior Haute Couture, Rick Owens, Thierry
Mugler, Vivienne Westwood, and more.
After five years of work, the exhibition (and its accompanying publication) explores ideas such as mirror stage, the skin ego, desire, and sexual difference, all showcased through some of the boldest and most exciting fashion designs. Definitely planning to check it out, see details below:
